Bela Maré

The Bela Maré project was commissioned by the Favelas Observatory, an entity located in the favelas complex of Maré, Rio de Janeiro. It involved the creation of a cultural center that could accommodate artists residing outside the community and offer a program of art exhibitions and cultural events for the local community. The purpose of this action was to literally put the favelas of Maré on the cultural map of Rio de Janeiro and thus contribute to combating the socio-cultural stigmatization of the area. To this end, the project aimed at the reuse of an existing industrial shed located next to Avenida Brasil, benefiting therefore the accessibility and articulation with the most frequented streets of the neighborhood. The project proposed a theater, a large and flexible central space able to adapt to diverse uses and activities as well as a sector destined to the professional formation in addition an artistic residence space. In order to connect the cultural center to the public space on the street, the proposal provided for the opening of a large span downstairs as well as a mobile device using a garage door on the upper deck where images and videos could be projected.
