Architectural project for the adaptation of the Jorge Machado Moreira building (CLA-UFRJ) to evacuation standards on the facade.
This project was motivated by the search for solutions to adapt the Jorge Machado Moreira building (JMM) to current standards of fire and accessibility. This building was occupied by the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU), Rectorate, School of Fine Arts (EBA), Center of Letters and Arts (CLA) and the Institute of Research and Urban Planning and Regional (IPPUR) on the Fundão campus until October 2016. The need for this research became a central issue in the generalized crisis that damaged the use of the building after the fire on the 8th floor in October 2016. Being an awarded project, Rio's icon modernism and recently classified by the city of Rio de Janeiro immediately posed the challenge of integrating escaped stairs on their facades. To meet this challenge, the project proposes incorporating the provisions required by the rules into a system more capable of accommodating many other services that would be attached to the main (north) facade of the building. This coupled facade would be made of metal structure, such as a permanent scaffolding factory hosting the building infrastructure, photovoltaic panels for capturing solar energy and protection, outdoor stairs and lifts, as well as interfaces to communication for media.
